AIA Connecticut is pleased to offer The Architect's Cookbook. We are so proud of this wonderful collection of recipes from our members and would love the opportunity to share it with everyone. We're receiving rave reviews, not only for the recipes, but also for the architectural design of the pages and the wonderful line drawings that incorporate food and buildings rolled into one. A syndicated radio show on NPR recently featured The Architect's Cookbook during its weekly programming. The public responded positively by ordering it after hearing about it on the radio.
The cookbook retails for $29.95 but we are happy to extend the member price of $21.95 to AIA members. Order Form.
If your chapter has a bookstore and you'd like to purchase copies to offer to your members, please call AIA Connecticut to discuss special pricing. 203-865-2195 The Architect's Cookbook makes an ideal gift for many different occasions!

In December 2010 AIAri hosted its annual design awards that were juried by AIAVA. Thomas Kerns represented the jury and we were so glad he could attend and his eloquent comments about the work being done in our region. In addition to our annual design awards we presented six Archistar awards to non-architect members of the community who have made outstanding contributions to architecture. The goal of the award is to recognize meaningful contributions of individuals on project teams and widen the scope beyond design to recognize achievement in other areas of project deliver : technical, social cultural and educational and economic development to name a few. In its first year we awarded six Archistar awards.
We have elected a new slate of officers for 2011. In January we hosted a committee workshop with the hopes of encouraging members to become more involved in the chapter. We will be participating in Gallery Night Providence for our second year engaging the public in all things Architecture.
In February we partnered with the South Side Community Land Trust to host an exhibition in our gallery entitled Carrot City. This is a traveling exhibit that shows how the design of buildings and cities can enable the production of food in the city while exploring what impact agricultural issues have on the design of urban spaces and buildings.
Our Committee on the Environment is hosting a CEUs 4yous event series featuring the film screening of Blue Vinyl. The EP has raised more money to add to the learning library and we have just made our second purchase of reference materials.
In March NCARB presented NCARB & You: IDP, ARE & Certification at our gallery space.
AIAri has formed a Fellowship committee consisting of four fellows from the RI chapter. We had our first meeting and will be meeting to assist anyone interested in pursuing the path of fellowship here in RI.

In July Tom Hartman AIA (president of WMAIA) put together a “HERS Summit” which brought together many stakeholders architects, realtors, builders, bankers etc. around this important issue. This was a “by invitation” event. We were very pleased to have John Nunnari attend on behalf of AIA Massachusetts to address legislative issues.
We’ve begun planning in earnest for the 2011 AIANE Conference. Our working title is “Livable Communities and the American Landscape.” The conference will be centered in either Northampton or Amherst (we are currently looking at venues) and we have begun planning seminar sessions and associated tours.
We applied for a grant to fund a special film in our ongoing film series. If funded, we feel this event will greatly expand our public visibility and continue to build upon our relationship with the Five College Architecture Program. Meanwhile, our regular Architecture through Film series will resume in the fall with four films that relate to issues of housing. This series takes place at Amherst College and is co-sponsored by the Five College Architecture Program.
We kick off the fall season with a program on the 8th edition of the Building Code that has been made available to WMAIA by special arrangement with the UMASS Facilities and Planning Dept. We’re very excited to be able to provide this 4-hour seminar to our members. We were also allowed to open this up to members of AIACM.
Later this fall we will be offering a program on Passive Houses with Marc Rosenbaum.
