AIA New Hampshire extends an invitation to its New England colleagues, spouses, and friends, to join us in Portsmouth October 2-4 for the annual AIANE conference. Come experience beautiful fall foliage, tours of historic and new buildings, educational events, social interaction, and lots of stimulating discussion!

The theme for the weekend is Portsmouth: Past and Present. Events include firm open houses and a boat ride and lobster dinner on Friday evening; on Saturday, historical walking tours, tours of the new LEED certified Library, the Music Hall renovation, the new Portwalk (Hard-hat tour) and two sustainable homes; presentations by Bert Cohen and Peter Britz on Portsmouth's process to become New Hampshire's first eco-municipality and "how architects fit in" and on "The Making of Strawbery Banke, or How Not to Start an Historic House Museum," by historian Dennis Robinson.

An evening reception will take place Saturday at the Discover Portsmouth Center where the People's choice entries and winners of the Awards program will be displayed, followed by the Awards banquet and presentation at the Sheraton Harborside Hotel. On Sunday, we'll meet at Strawbery Banke for brunch.

The AIANE conferences are small, but intimate. Attendees give them high scores for education and all around enjoyment, so mark your calendars now and plan to attend! October in Portsmouth is spectacular! We suggest you make your lodging reservations as soon as possible. It is a busy time of year in Portsmouth. Information on the registration page.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) has granted the Masters of Architecture degree program at the University of Hartford a three-year initial accreditation term, effective January 1, 2009. Graduates with an accredited degree are eligible to sit for the architectural registration exam after internship and IDP requirements are met. According to Department of Architecture Chair Michael J. Crosbie, “This is great news for our graduates, faculty, students, advisors, supporters, friends and everyone who has been part of the program over the years, working toward this goal.” The University of Hartford architecture program is the only other NAAB-accredited degree program in the State of Connecticut beside Yale University’s. Those interested in Hartford’s graduate architecture program and applying should visit the department’s website at: http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/architect/.

AIA Maine

After more than two decades of defeated proposals, the Maine Legislature, with assistance and lobbying from AIA Maine and other design and construction organizations, has enacted a Uniform Building and Energy Code. This code will replace all building and energy codes adopted by state agencies and municipalities which have created a crazy quilt of codes over the Maine landscape. The newly-signed law will provide that beginning July 2010, the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code must be enforced in a municipality that has more than 2,000 residents (enforcement of the Code in municipalities with fewer than 2,000 residents is optional). The Code utilizes the International family of codes.

The new Executive Director for AIA Maine is Susan Koch. Judith Harvie will remain on staff as Communications Director.

Members of AIAri attended the Annual AIA Grassroots Convention in Washington DC. Visits to Capitol Hill resulted in dialogue about the Economic Recovery Package and what it means for the State. Upon returning AIAri hosted a "Report from Washington" night to demystify not only the Stimulus Bill but also to demystify the inner workings of AIA National as well. President Greg Spiess highlighted some of the areas in which the Bill will effect the Design Profession. He discussed the importance of talking to legislators and becoming active especially in these economic times. Guest speaker Peter Kuttner gave an enlightening and lively talk about what AIA is doing Nationally and Regionally.
